Foreign nationals can apply for a provincial nomination through the Northwest Territories Program if they want to move to the Northwest Territories. 

You can submit an application in one of the following four categories:

  1. Skilled Worker
  2. Skilled Worker for Express Entry 
  3. Business Stream
  4. Critical Impact Workers
1)Program for Skilled Workers in the Northwest Territories

 

In order to be eligible for this program, you must meet the following requirements:

The employer is required to:

  1. have a vacant position.
  2. Choose a potential candidate.
  3. Be an NWT-registered company, industry organization, local, municipal, First Nation, or territorial authority that has been active for at least a year.
  4. Be in good standing with the NWT Employment Standards Office and the Worker’s Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC).
  5. Give evidence of regional and international recruitment efforts, along with a summary of the outcomes.
  6.  Obtain a positive Labour Market Opinion from HRSDC Service Canada. 
The employment offer must:
 
  1. Be for a full-time, permanent position with a minimum of 30 hours each week.
  2. Be in a profession that requires a high level of competence.
  3. Not be in opposition to current collective bargaining agreements.
  4. The NWT Employment Standards Act must be followed.
  5. Give what is the standard wage in your industry.
The nominee should:
 
  1. Possess the qualification or accreditation required for the particular trade or occupation.
  2. Meet any territorial certification, licensing, or registration requirements for the position, if applicable.
  3. Possess the requisite professional experience for the chosen profession.
  4. Submit documentation demonstrating adequate financial or settlement supports in the NWT.
  5. Either speak French or English well enough to communicate.
  6. Not be considered for refugee status.
2) Northwest Territories Skilled Workers Express Entry Stream
 
Foreign nationals with a profile in the federal Express Entry pool are the target audience for the Northwest Territories Express Entry Stream for Skilled Workers.
 
In addition to meeting the same requirements as the Skilled Worker stream, employers and applicants must also fulfil the following criteria:
 
  1. You must present the Express Entry pool acceptance letter from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
  2. Give a working validation code for the job seeker.
  3. Keep your Express Entry pool status current throughout the application process.
  4. Satisfies the requirements for the Northwest Territories Skilled Worker stream.
  5. Have indicated a desire to live in the Northwest Territories permanently.
3) Critical Impact Worker Program in the Northwest Territories
 
In order to be eligible for this program, you must meet the following requirements:
 
The employer is required to:
 
  1. Have an open position.
  2. Find a potential candidate.
  3.  Possess a valid business license, be a member of an industry association, or represent a local, municipal, First Nation, or territorial authority in the Northwest Territories.
  4. The Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission must consider you to be in good standing. 
  5. Give evidence of regional and international recruitment initiatives and produce a report on the outcomes. 
  6. Obtain a favourable Labour Market Opinion from HRSDC Service Canada.
The employment contract ought to:
 
  1. Be for a full-time, permanent position with a minimum of 30 hours each week.
  2. Being employed in a profession requiring NOC skill levels C or D.
  3. Give the ongoing wage in your industry.
  4. Be in good standing with the NWT Employment Standards Office and the Worker’s Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC).
The nominee should:
 
  1. Possess a temporary work permit and have six months’ worth of experience in the same position.
  2. Submit documentation demonstrating adequate financial or settlement supports in the NWT.
  3. Possess the requisite professional experience for the chosen profession.
  4. Be able to communicate simply in either French or English.
  5.  
  6. Not be a candidate for asylum.
4) Business Stream for the Northwest Territories
 
The Northwest Territories Business Stream is designed for business owners who want to start or buy a business in the area and have the necessary capital to do so.
